Hospital Admission Process for Elective Surgery

This document is intended to help you understand the steps involved before and during hospital admission for a planned (elective) surgery.

1. Initial Consultation

  • You will meet a specialist for further assessment.

  • Your diagnosis will be confirmed, and the need for surgery will be explained.

  • The doctor will discuss the risks, benefits, and alternative treatment options.

  • A surgery date will be proposed.

  • You may be required to undergo pre-operative investigations such as blood tests, ECG, or imaging.

  • Most insurance providers do not cover the initial consultation. You may have to pay for the first visit.


2. Guarantee Letter (GL) Application

(If using insurance or panel coverage)

  • The hospital will assist in applying for a Guarantee Letter (GL) from your insurance provider.

  • Required documents typically include:

    • Copy of identification card/passport

    • Medical insurance card

    • Medical report from the doctor

  • GL approval may take a few working days.

  • If the GL is not approved, the patient will need to proceed on a self-pay basis.


3. Pre-admission Registration

  • Done prior to the admission date to ensure a smooth process.

  • You will:

    • Complete admission forms

    • Confirm the admission date and ward/room type

    • Pay a deposit (if required)

  • You will also receive instructions such as:

    • Fasting requirements (if applicable)

    • Medications to stop or continue


4. Ward Admission

On the day of surgery:

  • Register at the hospital admission counter at the scheduled time

  • You will be brought to the ward for surgical preparation

  • The nurse will:

    • Check your vital signs

    • Take a brief history

    • Provide hospital attire

  • The doctor and anaesthetist may review you before surgery


5. Items to Bring

Please bring the following on admission:

Important documents

  • Identification card / passport

  • Insurance card & GL letter (if available)

  • Referral letter / medical reports

  • List of current medications

Personal items

  • Comfortable clothing (for discharge)

  • Toiletries (toothbrush, soap, towel)

  • Slippers

  • Headscarf/undergarments (if needed)

Others

  • Mobile phone & charger

  • Sufficient cash (if needed)

Avoid bringing valuables such as jewellery or large amounts of cash.
