“How Many Natural Births Have You Done, Doctor?”

It’s a question I get asked quite often — and I completely understand why.
Many women today are empowered and informed. They want to know that their doctor supports natural birth and is confident in managing it. And the truth is, natural birth — a vaginal delivery without unnecessary interventions — is the goal for most obstetricians, myself included.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting hundreds of women through spontaneous, unmedicated labours and gentle vaginal deliveries. I’ve celebrated the raw power of women bringing life into the world on their own terms — and it’s nothing short of awe-inspiring every time.
That said, part of being a safe, responsible obstetrician is understanding that every labour is unique — and that sometimes, nature needs a little help.
There are moments where a baby’s heart rate drops, where labour stalls for too long, or where a mother’s health takes a turn. In these cases, medical intervention — be it an assisted vaginal delivery or a Caesarean section — isn’t a failure. It’s a tool we use to protect both mom and baby. My commitment is always to a safe birth, not just a “natural” one.
So to answer the question: Yes, I’ve been alongside many women for natural births, and I will always advocate for it where safe and appropriate. But I will also always have your safety — and your baby’s — as my top priority.
Because at the end of the day, the best birth is one where both of you come out healthy, safe, and empowered.
